What these terms mean

Every classification on this page, defined. These are controlled-vocabulary terms, so the same word means the same thing on every profile.

Fusion developer
Develops a fusion device or power plant concept. Carries no implication that the device exists or works.
Fusion
Organizations pursuing energy from nuclear fusion, and their dedicated supply chain.
Levitated dipole › › Levitated dipole
Confinement around a single magnetically levitated superconducting ring, modelled on how planetary magnetospheres hold plasma.
Deuterium–tritium
Lowest ignition threshold; 80% of energy in 14.1 MeV neutrons. The reference fuel for every near-term net-gain claim.

In OpenStar Technologies’s own words

Quoted from the organisation’s own site as we archived it. Their description of themselves, not ours, and not a claim this site has checked.

Founded in Wellington, New Zealand - OpenStar has assembled a team of the world's best and brightest to revive the levitated dipole concept. Having achieved first plasma in just two years on a tight budget, the team is eager to push fusion technology forward.

Thomas co-founded OpenStar out of the Robinson Research Institute with the belief that fusion energy could be built faster and cheaper than anyone thought possible. He built the plasma physics team that proved it, and now leads product development and strategic partnerships as OpenStar moves toward commercial fusion.

A Fellow of the Royal Society New Zealand Te Apārangi, Professor Badcock has over 30 years of applied R&D experience, and is a globally recognised expert in superconducting systems and electric machines. As Chief Engineer (Machines) and Professor at the Robinson Research Institute, he has led pioneering work in high-temperature superconducting dynamos, propulsion systems, and compact fusion applications.
