The Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) is an agency of the Department of Science and Technology on Commonwealth Avenue in Diliman, Quezon City. It dates from 13 June 1958 and was formerly the Philippine Atomic Energy Commission. Under Executive Order 128 of 1987 it both carried out nuclear research and licensed and regulated nuclear and radioactive materials; its regulatory functions passed to the new Philippine Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (PhilATOM), created by Republic Act 12305 on 18 September 2025. PNRI operates the Philippine Research Reactor-1, which first went critical in August 1963 and has been shut down since 1988; a subcritical assembly began operating in its place in 2022.
