First plasma

The first time a newly built fusion device successfully forms a plasma at all. It demonstrates that the machine works as an integrated system, magnets, vacuum, heating and control together, but says nothing about performance: temperature, density and confinement time are usually far below what the same machine will eventually reach. First plasma is the earliest rung on the fusion milestone ladder, well before scientific breakeven or ignition.
