First wall
The innermost surface of a fusion device: the first solid material the plasma's heat and particles reach. It must survive constant particle bombardment, intense heat and, in a D-T machine, a steady flux of 14.1 MeV neutrons, all at once and for years at a time. No first-wall material has yet been tested at the neutron dose a power plant would impose, because no neutron source of the right energy and intensity to do so yet exists.
