Modular construction
Building a reactor largely from factory-made modules sized to travel by road, rail or sea, then assembling them on site, instead of building most of it on site as a one-off. In 'small modular reactor' the word also often means a plant made of several identical reactor units that can be added over time. The economic case for SMRs rests on factory production and repeated builds bringing costs down. No SMR design has yet been built as a series of factory-made units, so that case is a projection, not a demonstrated result.
