Also known as ANSTO

The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) is a statutory body of the Australian Government, established in April 1987 to replace the Australian Atomic Energy Commission, which dated from 1952. Its main campus is at Lucas Heights on the southern edge of Sydney, and it also has a site at Clayton in Melbourne. ANSTO operates OPAL, a 20 MW pool-type research reactor that started operating in August 2006 and which ANSTO describes as Australia's only nuclear reactor. OPAL is used to make radioisotopes for medicine and industry, for research with neutron beams and to dope silicon for semiconductors. The older HIFAR and MOATA reactors at Lucas Heights have been shut down.
