The South African Nuclear Energy Corporation is a state-owned company set up under the Nuclear Energy Act of 1999, succeeding the Atomic Energy Corporation; it was incorporated on 24 February 2000. It is based at Pelindaba in North West Province, about 30 km west of Pretoria. It operates SAFARI-1, a 20 megawatt research reactor that Wikipedia says has run only on low enriched uranium since 2009, and its subsidiary NTP Radioisotopes sells medical isotopes including molybdenum-99. Its mandate covers processing of source material, including uranium enrichment, and research in nuclear energy and radiation science.
