The Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology (PINSTECH) is a national research laboratory at Nilore, about 24 km southeast of Islamabad, operated by the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission. Its construction was completed in 1965. After the 1971 war with India it was repurposed as a primary weapons laboratory, and since the 1990s its work has turned increasingly to civilian research. It operates two research reactors: PARR-I, a 10 MW pool-type reactor running since December 1965, and PARR-II, a 30 kW miniature neutron source reactor running since 1989; a third, PARR-III, is listed as under construction. It also has particle accelerators and, since 2020, has been expanding its production of medical isotopes.
