Nuclear site licence (UK)
The licence the Office for Nuclear Regulation grants to the operator of a specific site in Great Britain before a nuclear installation can be built or run there, with conditions that apply for the life of the site. A completed Generic Design Assessment does not provide one: the design is assessed without a site, and a site licence, environmental permits and planning permission all have to be obtained separately. Under the Energy Act 2023, a fusion energy facility does not need a nuclear site licence unless it shares a site with a fission reactor.
