The Joint Research Centre is the European Commission's in-house research body, which says it provides evidence-based knowledge and science to support EU policies. Its headquarters are in Brussels, and it has research sites in Ispra (Italy), Geel (Belgium), Karlsruhe (Germany), Petten (the Netherlands) and Seville (Spain). The Commission describes the Karlsruhe site as its primary hub for nuclear safety and security research, and the Petten site's work includes nuclear safety. The Geel site has developed reference materials and measurement methods for EU policy since 1960.
