The Institute of Nuclear Physics in Almaty is a Kazakh research institute established in 1957, in the Soviet period, for research in nuclear physics and applied nuclear technology. It operates the WWR-K research reactor, a 6 MW pool-type reactor that started in 1967, together with a critical assembly and accelerator facilities. The institute describes itself as Kazakhstan's only centre for fundamental and applied nuclear research and for training staff for the nuclear industry, and says it produces 85% of the radiopharmaceuticals used in the country.
