Kazatomprom is Kazakhstan's national atomic company, established in 1997 and based in Astana, and the state's operator for the import and export of uranium, rare metals and nuclear fuel. It has priority rights to the country's uranium reserves; according to the company, Kazakhstan has been the world's largest uranium miner since 2009. All its production uses in-situ recovery, in which a solution is pumped through the ore underground to dissolve the uranium, instead of conventional mining. It supplied over 40% of global primary uranium in 2019. The state fund Samruk-Kazyna holds the majority, after 15% of the shares were floated in Astana and London in 2018. It has made fuel assemblies at the Ulba plant since 2021.
