The National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan is a nuclear research organisation based in Kurchatov, in the Abai Region. Its branches include the Institute of Atomic Energy, the Institute of Radiation Safety and Ecology and the Institute of Geophysical Research. It operates the IGR impulse graphite reactor and the IVG.1M reactor, which it says has been converted to low-enriched uranium fuel, and the KTM tokamak, built for testing fusion materials.
- Sector
- Fission, Fusion
- Technology
- Tokamak
- Role
- National laboratory, Research institute, Operator
It is the operator of record for IGR (operating) and IVG.1M (operating).
Terms
- Tokamak
- Doughnut-shaped magnetic confinement using a strong toroidal field plus a current driven through the plasma itself. The most-studied configuration, and the one ITER uses. Its main open problem is heat exhaust at the divertor, where the plasma edge concentrates power onto a small area, together with the risk of disruptions: sudden, uncontrolled losses of the plasma current.
