Pulse
One period of plasma operation on a magnetic confinement device, from the plasma forming to it ending, identified by a pulse number where the source gives one. JET's record pulse, number 104522 on 3 October 2023, released 69.26 megajoules of fusion energy over five to six seconds (UKAEA says five, EUROfusion six). Pulse and shot mean the same thing; which word a laboratory uses is a matter of habit. The length of a pulse is its plasma duration, which is not the same as its energy confinement time.
