The Comissão Nacional de Energia Nuclear (CNEN) is Brazil's federal nuclear energy agency, attached to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. It was created in 1956 and became a federal autarchy in 1962. In 2021 its regulatory functions were split off into a new National Nuclear Safety Authority (ANSN), leaving CNEN to promote nuclear research, teaching and applications. Its research units include IPEN in São Paulo, CDTN in Belo Horizonte and IEN in Rio de Janeiro, and it leads the Brazilian Multipurpose Reactor (RMB) project at Iperó. It also supports fusion research and has planned a national Nuclear Fusion Laboratory (LFN) on the RMB site.
