What these terms mean
Every classification on this page, defined. These are controlled-vocabulary terms, so the same word means the same thing on every profile.
- National laboratory
- A state-funded laboratory operating at national scale, usually running facilities no single university could support.
- Operator
- Runs a facility, which may have been built by someone else.
- Fusion
- Organizations pursuing energy from nuclear fusion, and their dedicated supply chain.
- Z-pinch › › Z-pinch
- A current driven straight through a plasma column, whose own magnetic field squeezes it inward. Long dismissed as unstable; sheared-flow stabilisation revived it.
In Sandia National Laboratories’s own words

Sandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC., a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International, Inc., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-NA-0003525.
Sandia National Laboratories is operated and managed by National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC., a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International, Inc. National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia operates Sandia National Laboratories as a contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and supports numerous federal, state, and local government agencies, companies, and organizations.
In keeping with our vision to be the nation’s premier science and engineering laboratory for national security and technology innovation, we recruit the best and the brightest, equip them with world-class research tools and facilities, and provide opportunities to collaborate with technical experts from many different scientific disciplines.
The excitement and importance of our work; an exemplary work environment; partnerships with academia, industry, and government; and our record of historic contributions help us attract exceptional staff. Our employees are recognized by their professional peers for their outstanding contributions.
The Z machine’s role in solving the world’s energy challenges is directly tied to its fusion potential. With growing concerns about the health of our planet and escalating energy needs, the development of fusion technology is especially promising.
Z is crucial to Sandia’s mission to ensure the reliability and safety of our nuclear stockpile as it ages – it allows scientists to study materials under conditions similar to those produced by the detonation of a nuclear weapon, and it produces key data used to validate physics models in computer simulations.
