What these terms mean

Every classification on this page, defined. These are controlled-vocabulary terms, so the same word means the same thing on every profile.

Reactor developer
Develops a fission reactor design. Carries no implication that anything is licensed, funded or built.
Fission
Advanced and small modular fission reactor developers, plus established reactor vendors.
Sodium fast reactor › › Sodium fast reactor
Liquid sodium coolant with a fast neutron spectrum. Sodium carries heat superbly at atmospheric pressure, but burns in air and reacts violently with water.
High-assay low-enriched uranium
5–20% U-235. The binding supply constraint for most advanced reactor designs.

In Oklo’s own words

Quoted from the organisation’s own site as we archived it. Their description of themselves, not ours, and not a claim this site has checked.

Oklo's technology has been built and operated before. Our fast reactor design benefits from robust inherent safety performance. The reactor is self-stabilizing, self-controlling, and cooled by natural forces. This means the plant is walk-away safe and the technology that enables this has been demonstrated at scale.

Secretary Granholm taking the controls on Oklo's liquid metal experiment, part of the first set of tests conducted at Argonne's new Thermal-Hydraulic Experimental Test Article.

Only fast reactors can use waste as fuel, and in fact, this capability too was demonstrated already with EBR-II. Oklo is currently doing work with the Idaho National Laboratory to take the waste fuel from EBR-II and use it for our very first Aurora Powerhouse.

Oklo was selected for the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE's) Reactor Pilot Program, with two projects awarded to Oklo and one to its subsidiary, Atomic Alchemy. Aurora-INL is one of these projects and is planned for deployment at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). Oklo was also selected to participate in the DOE's Fuel Line Pilot Projects to build and operate three fuel-fabrication facilities to support the deployment of advanced reactors, including the Advanced Fuel Fabrication Facility at INL.

Oklo secured a DOE site use permit at INL in 2019 and was awarded EBR-II fuel for Aurora’s first core. The company has since completed the NRC Phase 1 pre-application readiness assessment and submitted key technical reports supporting its licensing path. Oklo is targeting Aurora-INL operation in late 2027 to early 2028.

Oklo has sites and planned facilities across the United States and is building three fast-reactor-enabled businesses: clean power, advanced nuclear fuel, and critical, life-saving radioisotopes.

Oklo is developing next-generation fission powerhouses to produce abundant, affordable, clean energy at a global scale – starting with the Aurora, which can produce up to 75MWe of electrical power. Oklo's fast reactors incorporate inherent safety features and can be fueled by recycled waste.

Oklo's world-class team comes from Fortune 500 and global companies, bringing together expertise and experience from a number of industries, from nuclear power, to aerospace, to automotive, to tech to deliver an advanced energy product.

Oklo is designing and deploying advanced fission power plants to provide clean, reliable, affordable energy.

Oklo's plants compare favourably economically across all energy sources. This is rooted in our technology's use of less material to make each unit of energy over its lifetime.

We use the same fission reaction energizing nuclear power plants today, but in a new way. This enables our technology to have true, inherent safety and allows us to use nuclear waste as fuel.

Where Oklo sits

Composed from records in this dataset, not from outside research. Every figure below is counted from what the site holds, so it moves when the data does.

Oklo is one of 4 organisations in this dataset pursuing sfr.

It is one of 103 we hold in US.

It also holds 1 award or agreement carrying no cash figure, which are deliberately not added to that total.

2 regulatory milestones are tracked against a regulator's own record.
