Also known as ANL, Argonne

Argonne National Laboratory is a US Department of Energy research centre near Lemont, Illinois, operated by UChicago Argonne LLC for the University of Chicago. It grew out of the Manhattan Project's Metallurgical Laboratory and was chartered on 1 July 1946 as the first US national laboratory. In its early decades it developed reactor designs for the Atomic Energy Commission, including Chicago Pile 3, a heavy-water moderated reactor, and Experimental Breeder Reactor I in Idaho, which lit four light bulbs with nuclear-generated electricity in 1951. Its Idaho site merged into Idaho National Laboratory in 2005. Its research now spans energy storage, materials, supercomputing and national security as well as nuclear energy.
