The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is India's main nuclear research centre, headquartered at Trombay in Mumbai. It was set up in January 1954 as the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay, and operates under the Department of Atomic Energy, which reports directly to the Prime Minister. It covers the whole of India's nuclear programme, from reactor design, fuel and materials development to spent-fuel reprocessing, waste disposal, isotopes and radiation applications, and it runs several research reactors, including Apsara, India's first. Its research also includes plasma physics, accelerators and lasers.
