The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) is the Government of India department for nuclear energy, set up under the direct charge of the Prime Minister by a Presidential Order on 3 August 1954 and headquartered in Mumbai. Its apex body is the Atomic Energy Commission, and the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board also sits under it. Its research centres include the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Mumbai, the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research at Kalpakkam and the Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology at Indore, and its public-sector companies include the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) and BHAVINI. Its stated programmes include fast breeder and thorium-based reactors, research reactors for isotope production, and work in areas related to fusion research.
