Bechtel is a privately held US engineering, procurement and construction company founded in San Francisco in 1898 and now headquartered in Reston, Virginia. Its nuclear work began in 1949 with the Experimental Breeder Reactor I in Idaho; during the 1960s and 1970s it helped build about 40% of US nuclear plants, and since 2001 it has been building the Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant, a project criticised by the Department of Energy's Inspector General over cost and quality. It says it works in more than 33 countries.
