Also known as BUDKER INSTITUTE OF NUCLEAR PHYSICS
The Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics (BINP) is a Russian research institute in Akademgorodok, Siberia, founded in 1959 by Gersh Budker. Despite its name it works on particle accelerators and plasma physics rather than reactors or weapons, and it employs over 3,000 people. Its fusion work centres on open, or mirror, magnetic traps. The IAEA World Survey of Fusion Devices (2022) lists it as operator of the GDT gas-dynamic trap, GOL-NB and SMOLA, with CAT under construction and a larger gas-dynamic multiple-mirror trap, GDMT, planned. It was placed on a US sanctions list in July 2023.
