MEPhI is a public technical university in Moscow, founded in 1942 as the Moscow Mechanical Institute of Munitions and renamed the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute in 1953 to train staff for the Soviet atomic programme. It operates a 2.5 megawatt pool-type research reactor. It received National Research Nuclear University status in 2009.
