The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) is an independent US nonprofit that carries out research and development on generating, delivering and using electricity. It grew out of US congressional hearings in the early 1970s after the 1965 Northeast blackout. It has offices and laboratories in Palo Alto, California; Charlotte, North Carolina; Knoxville, Tennessee; Washington, DC; and Lenox, Massachusetts. Its nuclear research supports the operation of existing plants and advanced reactors, and it collaborates with more than 450 companies.
