Firefly Fusion

Firefly Fusion is a privately held fusion start-up headquartered in Aix-en-Provence, France. It is designing a compact tokamak shaped for negative triangularity, in which the plasma's D-shaped cross-section is reversed, a shape that experiments on the DIII-D tokamak in San Diego and elsewhere have linked to better confinement and stability. The machine would use actively cooled copper magnets rather than superconducting ones, so the company can build and iterate without waiting for superconducting magnet development. Its planned prototype is called LUCIOLE. Firefly collaborates with the DIII-D National Fusion Facility on negative-triangularity experiments and analysis, and is a member of the Fusion Industry Association.

Terms
- Tokamak
- Doughnut-shaped magnetic confinement using a strong toroidal field plus a current driven through the plasma itself. The most-studied configuration, and the one ITER uses. Its main open problem is heat exhaust at the divertor, where the plasma edge concentrates power onto a small area, together with the risk of disruptions: sudden, uncontrolled losses of the plasma current.
