What these terms mean

Every classification on this page, defined. These are controlled-vocabulary terms, so the same word means the same thing on every profile.

Supplier
Supplies components, materials or fuel to the sector without developing a reactor or device of its own.
Fuel cycle
Mining, conversion, enrichment, fabrication, reprocessing, waste and tritium supply.
Low-enriched uranium
Below 5% U-235.

In Lightbridge’s own words

Quoted from the organisation’s own site as we archived it. Their description of themselves, not ours, and not a claim this site has checked.

Lightbridge Corporation is a publicly-traded company headquartered in Reston, Virginia. We’re advancing state-of-the-art fuel technology with the potential to transform the safety, economics and efficiency of nuclear power plants. As we pioneer our independently-validated fuel design, we also advise emerging nuclear markets on implementing nuclear generation plans.

Nuclear power facilities can use our groundbreaking fuel design to reduce operating costs and waste and improve safety and performance in new and existing reactors.

There is less spent fuel per plant output when using Lightbridge Fuel™. The spent fuel is useless for weapons purposes.

A key safety feature of Lightbridge Fuel™ is that the internal temperature is 1,000°C cooler than current fuel. It does not reach the appropriate temperature needed to generate hydrogen gas in design basis accidents.

Our fuel increases power output and extends the length of the fuel cycle. Lightbridge Fuel™ also offers the lowest cost to add reliable electricity to the grid.

As the world’s population rises, so does our energy consumption. From 2015 to 2050, there is projected to be a 41 percent increase in energy demand. To illustrate the severity of the demand, China needs to add the equivalent of today’s U.S. power system to its electricity infrastructure by 2040, and India needs to add a power system the size of today’s European Union, according to the International Energy Agency. Our global challenge is meeting the demand without emitting significantly more carbon emissions.

The world can only achieve its energy and climate goals if nuclear power is a major part of the solution. With Lightbridge Fuel™, nuclear plants can scale more easily thanks to 90% availability, better economics and safer operation.

With Lightbridge Fuel™, a reactor can produce more power at a lower temperature. This is thanks to two unique features of our fuel – an increased coolant flow rate and increased fuel surface area.

We increased the coolant flow rate by removing flow-restricting spacer grids so more water can move through the core without increasing pump power. The increased flow rate operates with the same difference in outlet and inlet temperature while extracting more heat from the core. This allows for greater electricity generation. Meanwhile, more fuel surface area increases safety margins and allows the fuel to generate more heat.

Our innovative new fuel design can help meet the world’s growing energy and climate needs by using existing reactors to generate cheaper and safer zero-emission electricity.

For countries and organizations seeking to launch or expand a nuclear energy program, our team of experts can write a roadmap to success that considers national and international goals.

We have built a significant portfolio of patents reflecting years of research and development, and we anticipate substantial completion of our research efforts in the coming years and the testing of our fuel through third party vendors and others, including United States national laboratories.

Expanding our patent portfolio continues to be a strategic focus for Lightbridge. In 2019, we successfully obtained 20 new patents with an additional 12 patents in the United States and other key foreign countries as of the end of the first quarter of 2020. These new patents will help safeguard the Company’s intellectual property, which is an integral element of the Company’s plans to monetize Lightbridge Fuel™.

The members of our leadership team are among the most talented and dedicated experts in the advanced nuclear energy industry.

Our team of advisors counsel our management team on critical issues of diplomacy, policy, commercialization and more.

Lightbridge (NASDAQ: LTBR) is an advanced nuclear fuel technology company based in Reston, Virginia, USA. The Company is developing Lightbridge Fuel™, a proprietary next generation nuclear fuel technology for current and future reactors, which enhances economics, proliferation resistance, and safety of nuclear power, operating about 1000 °C cooler than standard fuel.
