Marathon Fusion is a San Francisco company, co-founded in 2023, that develops fuel-cycle technology for fusion power plants rather than a fusion machine of its own. Its work includes a tritium pumping system that it describes as isotopically selective, a lithium-enrichment process (plants that breed their own tritium need lithium enriched in lithium-6), and radioisotopes for medical therapies. It has also proposed producing gold as a by-product in fusion plants, which it presents as a source of extra revenue per plant. Marathon says it is supported by $18 million in funding from the US Department of Energy, the Breakthrough Energy fellows programme and private investors.
