Also known as MIT NRL, MITR, MITR-II, MIT Research Reactor
The MIT Nuclear Reactor Laboratory runs the MIT Research Reactor on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus in Cambridge. The reactor is a 6-megawatt tank-type design, cooled and moderated by light water with a heavy-water reflector, and has operated since 1958; the original MITR-I ran until 1974 and was replaced by the higher-flux MITR-II. The laboratory's recent work includes research on salt-based reactor technology and, with Idaho National Laboratory, a new centre for reactor instrumentation and sensors. It also trains MIT undergraduates as licensed reactor operators.
