Moltex Energy developed the Stable Salt Reactor, a design in which molten salt fuel is held in vented tubes inside fuel assemblies that sit in a pool of molten salt coolant. Its main design, the Stable Salt Reactor Wasteburner (SSR-W), was intended to run on fuel recovered from used reactor fuel by Moltex's own recycling process, WATSS, and the company planned to build the first unit with NB Power at Point Lepreau in New Brunswick, Canada. Its Canadian business is based in Saint John. The UK parent company, Moltex Energy Limited, has been in administration since 17 March 2025, according to Companies House. On 13 August 2026 Moltex announced that Nuclea Energy had agreed to buy its technology portfolio, including WATSS, SSR-W and the FLEX reactor design.

- Fuel DISSOLVED in the salt, which in most designs is fuel carrier and coolant at once. Distinct from a salt-cooled reactor with solid fuel; the two are often confused. Moderator, where one is used at all, is a separate design choice from the salt: thermal-spectrum MSRs are typically graphite-moderated, fast-spectrum MSRs carry no moderator.
