What these terms mean
Every classification on this page, defined. These are controlled-vocabulary terms, so the same word means the same thing on every profile.
- Reactor developer
- Develops a fission reactor design. Carries no implication that anything is licensed, funded or built.
- Fission
- Advanced and small modular fission reactor developers, plus established reactor vendors.
- Molten salt reactor › › Molten salt reactor
- Fuel DISSOLVED in the salt. Distinct from a salt-cooled reactor with solid fuel — conflating the two is the most common advanced-nuclear classification error.
- Thorium
- Thorium-232, which is fertile rather than fissile: it must absorb a neutron to become uranium-233 before it can fission. More abundant than uranium.

A clean, reliable energy system requires stable, carbon-free sources alongside wind and solar. Nuclear energy provides the backbone that makes such a system work. Thorizon is developing a small modular reactor based on molten salt, the most complete nuclear technology available. By combining this with modular design, we unlock a new generation of nuclear energy that delivers affordable, clean energy at scale.
Molten salt enables a unique combination of efficient fuel use, inherent safety, and the delivery of both electricity and high temperature industrial heat. It allows significantly more energy to be extracted from nuclear fuel, including from nuclear waste, while operating at low pressure for enhanced safety. This makes molten salt reactors well suited for deployment close to industry and data centers. Built on more than 75 years of research and operational experience, the technology is proven. Thorizon’s innovation lies in turning this foundation into a commercially deployable system.
Thorizon’s patented fuel cartridges divide the reactor core into smaller, standardized modules. This enables off‑site series production and true modular scalability. The cartridges are easy to manufacture, transport, and handle, making reactors faster to build and more flexible to deploy. Because cartridges are replaced every 5–10 years, Thorizon can rely on materials already qualified and proven in existing reactors. By avoiding unnecessary materials innovation, Thorizon reduces development risk and accelerates time to market.
Thorizon follows a step-by-step path to commercialization, building on proven technology, existing licenses, and progressively increasing system integration. Each phase is designed to reduce risk, validate performance, and accelerate time to market.
We develop and test key components, containment concepts, and subsystems in dedicated laboratory environments. This phase validates critical functions and materials under representative conditions. This work is carried out in Thorizon’s laboratories in Amsterdam and Eindhoven.
The first full‑scale power plant delivers 100MW electricity to the end-user. Leveraging an existing nuclear site enables a faster and more predictable path to commercial operation. Thorizon One is built at EPZ in Borssele, a uniquely secured licensed nuclear site with grid access and operating experience.
We are building clean, reliable energy without compromises. Each Thorizon reactor avoids as much CO₂ as a city the size of Amsterdam. We unlock the full potential of nuclear energy by overcoming the barriers of cost, safety, and waste that have held it back. Construction starts in the early 2030s.
Thorizon delivers a compact reactor designed to integrate seamlessly into industrial clusters. It provides low-cost energy at €60/MWh, enabled by modular series construction and intrinsically safe molten salt technology.
Thorizon is a European nuclear company with offices in the Netherlands and France, strategically positioned to leverage the continent’s nuclear expertise and advanced manufacturing ecosystem. We have secured both private and public funding, designed our demonstrator and commercial reactors, and confirmed sites for deployment. With our launching customer onboard and active engagement with regulators in multiple European countries, Thorizon is well positioned to start construction in the early 2030s.
We combine deep nuclear expertise with industrial execution power. Our team includes reactor designers, licensing experts, and hardware engineers experienced from component design to full reactor deployment. We prototype in-house, iterate quickly, and operate in cross-functional teams built to scale, moving the next generation of nuclear from research to reality at pace.

Thorizon is a European developer of next-generation small modular reactors. Our reactors provide reliable baseload power and high-temperature heat for industry. Their compact footprint and low-pressure operation enable deployment close to where it’s needed. Together with leading partners in energy and manufacturing, we are bringing the first Thorizon reactor to market. Designed for series production from day one.
Molten‑salt reactors uniquely provide both power and high‑temperature heat with unmatched safety and the most efficient use of fuel. Thorizon’s patented cartridges divide the reactor core into smaller modules, unlocking the benefits of off-site series production and true modular scalability. Easy to operate, move, and deploy, these cartridges make building reactors faster and more flexible than ever.
No one builds the future alone. That’s why we work with leading partners across engineering, operations, fuel production, research and financing. These collaborations let us design, license, manufacture, and deploy our reactors at speed. Together with our partners and customers, we are scaling Thorizon reactors to deliver clean, affordable energy to the companies that need it today.
Thorizon was founded as a spin-off from NRG, the Netherlands’ national nuclear research institute, where our molten salt technology was developed quietly for decades. Since then, we have moved from research into real-world development, securing investment and partnering to rapidly design, prototype, and test our technology. Construction starts in the early 2030s.
Excited to share that THORIZON has won the ASML Emerging Innovator Award at Hello Tomorrow Amsterdam.
Eight parties sign a Memorandum of Understanding to advance the full Thorizon roadmap, with the PIONEER demonstrator in Noord-Holland and the Thorizon One commercial reactor in Zeeland.
