The Basic Plasma Science Facility is a national user facility for fundamental plasma physics at the University of California, Los Angeles. Its main device is the Large Plasma Device (LAPD), a 20-metre linear machine that makes a strongly magnetised plasma column about 16.5 metres long. LAPD began operating in 1991 and reached its current form in 2001. The facility is supported by the Department of Energy's Fusion Energy Sciences programme and the National Science Foundation, and half of LAPD's run time goes to outside scientists chosen through a yearly call.
