Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences (NERS) is the University of Michigan's nuclear engineering programme, in Ann Arbor. Its research covers nuclear energy, radiation, plasma science and high-power lasers; recent work includes a study of small modular reactors for industrial hydrogen production. It runs ZEUS, which the university describes as the most powerful laser in the United States; the National Science Foundation has awarded $33 million for a further five years of its operation and upgrades.
