The United States Department of Energy is the federal department responsible for national energy policy, nuclear power research and development, and the country's nuclear weapons programme. It was created in 1977, after the 1973 oil crisis, and is headquartered in the Forrestal Building in Washington, D.C. Most of its research is carried out through the national laboratories, which include Idaho, Oak Ridge, Argonne, Los Alamos, Livermore and the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. In this dataset it appears as the funder of the milestone-based fusion awards and as the authority for reactors built on its own sites, such as Oklo's Aurora at Idaho National Laboratory, which do not need an NRC licence.
