The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is the independent federal agency that licenses and oversees civilian nuclear reactors, fuel-cycle facilities and radioactive materials in the United States. It was created by the Energy Reorganization Act of 1974 and began operating in January 1975. It is led by five commissioners appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate for five-year terms, and is based in North Bethesda, Maryland. A May 2025 executive order directed it to decide new reactor licence applications within 18 months and to overhaul its regulations, and in February 2026 it began a reorganisation to speed up licensing.
