Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) is a Canadian federal Crown corporation. It developed the CANDU reactor from the 1950s and sold CANDU reactors abroad until October 2011, when the government sold its commercial CANDU business to Candu Energy. It owns the Chalk River Laboratories, which it aims to redevelop as a modern nuclear science campus, and works with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories on clean-up of historic waste sites. It also owns the Whiteshell Laboratories in Manitoba, now being decommissioned, and the shut-down Douglas Point and Gentilly-1 prototype power reactors.
