Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) runs Canada's federal nuclear research sites, chief among them the Chalk River Laboratories in Ontario, about 180 km north-west of Ottawa, where research led to the CANDU reactor. The sites belong to the Crown corporation Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), which contracts CNL to manage and operate them and to carry out the government's radioactive waste and decommissioning work; CNL itself is managed by Nuclear Laboratory Partners of Canada. Its work spans support for the existing reactor fleet, small modular reactors, fuels, hydrogen, medical isotopes such as actinium-225, and decommissioning at Chalk River and the Whiteshell Laboratories. It also has a fusion programme.
