China Academy of Engineering Physics

Also known as CAEP, Ninth Academy
The China Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP) is China's main organisation for the research, development and testing of nuclear weapons. It was founded in October 1958 as the Ninth Academy of the Second Ministry of Machine Building, was renamed in the 1980s, and has had its headquarters in Mianyang, Sichuan, since then. Its institutes include a Research Center of Laser Fusion in Mianyang, which works on laser-driven (inertial confinement) fusion, the reason CAEP is listed here. CAEP has been on the US Department of Commerce Entity List since 1997. No fusion device or result of CAEP's is recorded in this dataset.

Terms
- Inertial confinement
- Compressing fuel so fast that its own inertia holds it together long enough to burn: nanoseconds, not seconds. Every ICF approach shares the same open problem beyond ignition itself: repeating a shot several times a second at low enough cost per shot to run a power plant, which no driver has yet demonstrated.
