Huazhong University of Science and Technology is a public university in Wuhan, Hubei province, formed in its present shape by a merger in 2000. According to the IAEA's 2022 World Survey of Fusion Devices, it operates J-TEXT, a conventional iron-core tokamak that was formerly TEXT/TEXT-U at the University of Texas at Austin and produced its first plasma in China in 2007. J-TEXT is used to study plasma confinement, stability and disruption mitigation in support of ITER and the design of China's planned CFETR reactor.
