Kyoto University is a national research university in Kyoto, Japan, founded in 1897. The IAEA's 2022 survey lists it as operator of two fusion experiments: Heliotron J, a helical-axis heliotron (a stellarator-type device) designed and built by the university in 2000, and LATE, which studies how to form low aspect ratio plasmas using only microwave heating and current drive at the electron cyclotron frequency. In fission, its Institute for Integrated Radiation and Nuclear Science at Kumatori, Osaka Prefecture, runs the KUR research reactor, a 5 MW reactor first critical in 1964, and the KUCA critical assembly.
