LINEA Innovations

LINEA Innovations is a Japanese fusion start-up founded on 29 September 2023 and based in Chiyoda, Tokyo, with 15 staff and advisers in July 2026 according to its company profile. It is developing a reactor that burns hydrogen and boron-11 (p-B11), a fuel it chose because, it says, the reaction produces almost no radioactive waste. Its design merges a field-reversed configuration, a self-organised ring of plasma, with magnetic mirror fields and uses high-energy beam particles to drive what it calls non-thermal fusion. Its team includes researchers from Nihon University's FRC experiments and the University of Tsukuba's tandem mirror, and it has announced an advisory agreement with TAE Technologies.

- Proton–boron-11
- Role
- Fusion developer
Terms
- Field-reversed configuration
- A self-organised plasma ring that generates its own confining field, with no central coil. Compact and high-beta, but stability over long timescales is the open question.
- Magnetic mirror
- Plasma trapped between two regions of strong magnetic field that reflect particles back. Simple and linear, but historically leaky at the ends.
- Proton–boron-11
- Called aneutronic because the main reaction releases no neutrons, though side reactions and impurities still produce some. Requires at least an order of magnitude more triple product than D-T. A p-¹¹B roadmap that skips D-T is a listed red flag.
