After building five stellarators across the globe, the world’s leading stellarator experts came together to establish Type One Energy. Our technology builds on decades of stellarator innovation, combining breakthrough advances in high-temperature superconducting magnets with the power of modern supercomputing.
Using non-planar, high temperature superconducting magnets to optimize plasma flow, Type One Energy can surpass all fundamental technical barriers to achieving fusion energy at commercial scale.
Located at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the HSX device was the world’s first optimized stellarator. The co-founders of Type One Energy built the HSX machine in the 1990s and conducted foundational stellarator research on it in the early 2000s.
Located in Greifswald, Germany, and operated by the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, W7-X is the world’s largest stellarator experiment. Our Chief Technology Officer served as a director of W7-X for 11 years and brings many lessons learned to Type One Energy.
Infinity One is Type One Energy’s engineering verification platform at TVA’s Bull Run Energy Complex near Oak Ridge, Tenn. Once completed in 2029, it will be the world’s most advanced stellarator, using breakthrough non-planar high temperature superconducting magnet technology. Beyond its applications as a verification tool, Infinity One will be the world’s first workforce training platform for the fusion industry.
In March 2025, Type One Energy published the world’s first comprehensive, self-consistent, and robust physics basis for a practical fusion power plant.
This suite of peer-reviewed papers serve as the foundation for Infinity Two, Type One Energy’s first stellarator fusion power plant. The consistent and robust physics solution for Infinity Two results in a deuterium-tritium (D-T) fueled, burning plasma stellarator with 800 MW of fusion power—delivering 400 MWe to the power grid.
The first phase, deployment of Infinity One operated by Type One Energy, is scheduled for commissioning and startup in 2029. Concurrently, Type One Energy, TVA, and AECOM are partnering to deploy Infinity Two, America’s first grid-scale, commercial fusion power plant.
With expertise developing and operating the HSX experiment at UW-Madison, they gathered a team of stellarator experts from around the world to form Type One Energy.
We partner with energy producers worldwide to rapidly commercialize and scale stellarator fusion technology . Type One Energy is the technology provider and original equipment manufacturer to the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Infinity Two project, the world’s first grid-scale, commercial fusion power plant.

Type One Energy announced the appointment of Bernard Looney to its Board of Directors on June 16, 2026. He served as CEO of bp from 2020 to 2023.
Our technical team invented the world’s first optimized stellarator and met critical milestones at the renowned HSX and W7-X stellarator experiments, leaving no fundamental technical barriers to the commercialization of fusion.
Using proven technologies, we’re taking a direct “shot on goal” at commercial-scale fusion energy in this decade at TVA’s Bull Run Energy Complex in East Tennessee.
