Type One Energy is a fusion company in Knoxville, Tennessee, founded in 2019 by stellarator researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison who had built and run the HSX experiment there. A stellarator confines plasma in a twisted magnetic field produced by shaped coils; Type One's design uses high-temperature superconducting magnets. It plans Infinity One, a prototype at the Tennessee Valley Authority's Bull Run Energy Complex that it says will start up in 2029, and Infinity Two, a 400 MWe deuterium–tritium power plant to be built there with TVA and AECOM. In March 2025 it published the physics basis for Infinity Two as seven papers in the Journal of Plasma Physics. Its early funding came from ARPA-E and from the Department of Energy's Milestone-Based Fusion Development and INFUSE programmes.

That removes the disruptions a tokamak's plasma current can cause and allows continuous operation, at the price of coils that are far harder to design and build.
