What these terms mean

Every classification on this page, defined. These are controlled-vocabulary terms, so the same word means the same thing on every profile.

Fusion developer
Develops a fusion device or power plant concept. Carries no implication that the device exists or works.
Supplier
Supplies components, materials or fuel to the sector without developing a reactor or device of its own.
Fusion
Organizations pursuing energy from nuclear fusion, and their dedicated supply chain.
Projectile-driven › › Projectile-driven
A physical projectile accelerated to extreme velocity compresses the fuel on impact.
Deuterium–tritium
Lowest ignition threshold; 80% of energy in 14.1 MeV neutrons. The reference fuel for every near-term net-gain claim.

In First Light Fusion’s own words

Quoted from the organisation’s own site as we archived it. Their description of themselves, not ours, and not a claim this site has checked.

We turn fusion expertise into accelerated R&D and breakthrough innovation across adjacent industries.

We possess world-class, record-breaking hypervelocity and high-pressure technology, with all capabilities integrated under one roof. Our unique combination of expertise, patented technology, and large-scale infrastructure enables us to deliver results that few facilities in the world can match.

First Light delivers advanced modelling and simulation tailored to high energy density physics, fusion, and hypersonic impact, enabling mission-critical insight where testing is difficult, costly, or simply, impossible. Our multi-scale, multi-physics toolsets model hydrodynamics, thermal conduction, material strength, radiation transport, and resistive magnetohydrodynamics, backed by proprietary atomic-scale models for extreme accuracy.

Our patented software rapidly integrates new physics, bespoke boundary conditions, and unique mission requirements, drawing on in-house expertise in aerothermodynamics, mechanical engineering, and plasma physics.

AI integration accelerates design cycles, automates optimisation, and continuously calibrates models with experimental data for maximum predictive confidence. We also deliver advanced diagnostic exploitation, including PDV, VISAR, and scintillator interpretation, deployable for real-time operational sensing.

Underpinning this is our high-performance computing infrastructure, scaling from precision single runs to thousands of simulations in parallel, enabling exhaustive design space exploration and robust statistical assurance.

Our pulsed power systems and hypervelocity impact platforms can recreate high-intensity, short-duration bursts of radiation and X-rays - enabling the qualification of systems, components, and materials against nuclear, space, and high-energy weapon effects.

FLARE is our inertial fusion architecture, designed to enable a simpler and more scalable path to fusion energy. By combining efficient compression with fast ignition, FLARE reduces the peak power required for ignition and system complexity—unlocking a more practical route to commercial deployment.

We work with governments, industrial partners, and leading academic institutions to accelerate the path to commercial fusion.

Where First Light Fusion sits

Composed from records in this dataset, not from outside research. Every figure below is counted from what the site holds, so it moves when the data does.

It is one of 14 we hold in GB.

It operates 1 device in this dataset, none of which carries recorded performance figures.
