Great British Energy – Nuclear (GBE-N) is a nuclear company owned by the UK government and sponsored by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. The legal entity was created as British Nuclear Fuels Limited (BNFL) in 1971 and ran fuel manufacturing, reprocessing at Sellafield and reactors until 2010. It was revived in July 2023 as Great British Nuclear to coordinate new nuclear build and took its current name on 20 March 2024. In March 2024 it bought the Wylfa and Oldbury sites from Horizon for £160 million, and it proposes to build three Rolls-Royce SMRs at Wylfa, with a final investment decision expected in 2029.
