In TWI’s own words

Quoted from the organisation’s own site as we archived it. Their description of themselves, not ours, and not a claim this site has checked.

We are a membership-based organisation, supporting both individuals and companies alike. We exist to provide authoritative and impartial expert advice, knowhow and safety assurance through engineering , materials and joining technologies – helping you design, create and operate the best products possible.

We span innovation, knowledge transfer and problem resolution across all aspects of welding, joining, surface engineering, inspection and whole-life integrity management. Descended from the British Welding Research Association (BWRA), we have grown into one of the foremost independent research and technology organisations.

Our R&D work has delivered a number inventions and developments to industry, including advancing MIG and TIG welding, creating CTOD and methods of understanding of brittle fracture, fatigue design SN curves, linear friction and friction stir welding, local vacuum electron beam welding, and many more. You can find out more on our innovation timeline (see link below) .

As well as our research programmes , we work directly with our Industrial Members through single client projects (SCPs) to provide solutions that directly assist the Member's business. The work undertaken during SCPs is confidential with the outcomes and associated intellectual property owned exclusively by the client.

Find out about the industries, manufacturers, organisations, standards and more that we work with.

The TWI's core research progarmme (CRP) aims to meet the needs of our Industrial Member companies.

TWI’s mechanical testing capabilities mean that our Industrial Members can be assured that materials or components meet standard or bespoke requirements.

Where TWI sits
