What these terms mean

Every classification on this page, defined. These are controlled-vocabulary terms, so the same word means the same thing on every profile.

Fusion developer
Develops a fusion device or power plant concept. Carries no implication that the device exists or works.
Fusion
Organizations pursuing energy from nuclear fusion, and their dedicated supply chain.
Laser ICF, direct drive › › Laser ICF, direct drive
Laser beams strike the fuel capsule directly. More efficient than indirect drive in principle, but far more sensitive to how evenly the beams are applied.
Deuterium–tritium
Lowest ignition threshold; 80% of energy in 14.1 MeV neutrons. The reference fuel for every near-term net-gain claim.

In Xcimer Energy’s own words

Quoted from the organisation’s own site as we archived it. Their description of themselves, not ours, and not a claim this site has checked.

Xcimer’s Science and Technology Advisory Board, made up of experts in fusion, laser technology and national security, is chaired by Mike Campbell. Feedback from the board informs Xcimer’s roadmap and ensures we remain focused on building the most scientifically credible roadmap in fusion.

Before Xcimer was officially incorporated, a small group of physicists, scientists and engineers, including the inventors of the excimer laser, contributed their time and advice to help arrive at the compelling and practical power plant architecture we are now pursuing. We are grateful for their contributions.

In 2024, we broke ground on our first high-energy laser system, Phoenix. It’s now up and running.

Located in our Denver laser bay, Phoenix features the first electron-beam-pumped excimer laser built in the private sector, and the first of its kind from any organization in more than 20 years.

Phoenix is the world's highest-energy use of SBS. It validates key elements of Xcimer's low-cost, high-energy laser fusion architecture. Now we are ready to scale.

Our work on Phoenix builds toward Athena, the world's first laser fusion power plant.

By 2035, we expect Athena to deliver 400 megawatts of safe, clean, affordable energy, around the clock, with fuel derived from seawater and lithium, cost-competitive with fossil fuels and renewables.

Laser-driven inertial fusion is the only fusion approach that has been scientifically proven. Read our February 2026 white paper with TRUMPF Laser SE to see how our gas excimer laser architecture makes it economical and scalable.

Nearly 200 engineers, physicists, and business professionals are turning proven science into crucial technology — with industry-leading execution. Learn about our mission, culture and values.

Our fusion power plants will unlock energy-intensive industries that require firm, abundant, carbon-free power, from AI training clusters to desalination and industrial decarbonization. Join the team commercializing the ultimate energy source.

We’ve designed our system from the ground up to compete on cost with fossil fuels and renewables.

No emissions. No pollutants. The only byproducts from our power plants? Helium and heat.

Where Xcimer Energy sits

Composed from records in this dataset, not from outside research. Every figure below is counted from what the site holds, so it moves when the data does.

Xcimer Energy is one of 7 organisations in this dataset pursuing laser icf, direct drive.

It is one of 103 we hold in US.

Disclosed equity funding totals $100m across 1 round, which ranks 10 of 14 among organisations here with a disclosed figure.

It also holds 1 award or agreement carrying no cash figure, which are deliberately not added to that total.
