Focused Energy is a laser fusion company based in Darmstadt, Germany. Its co-founders, the entrepreneur Thomas Forner and TU Darmstadt physics professor Markus Roth, launched it in August 2021, within two weeks of a National Ignition Facility (NIF) shot in California that the company describes as scientific ignition. It aims to turn NIF-style laser fusion, in which lasers compress a pellet of deuterium–tritium fuel, into a power plant built from mass-produced parts, and designs its own fuel capsules and high-repetition-rate lasers. Its team includes former leaders of NIF's ignition campaign. In 2023 it was selected for the US Department of Energy's Milestone-Based Fusion Development Program. It says it has more than 150 staff.
